Making Medicine: The Craft of Ancient Greek Healing explores the importance of the visual arts for the development of ancient Greek medicine. From representations of healers to depictions of doctors’ toolkits, the visual archive of ancient Greek medicine overwrites individualist genealogies of ancient medicine with new and more plural narratives. Such attention highlights the intersecting practices of artists and healers through their shared tool use and collaborative workshop environments, images of which artists carved onto public marble monuments and painted onto ceramics. Analysis of the visual archive of ancient medicine produces new narratives of antiquity that, in turn, revise accepted genealogies for modern medicine.
